2003, fresh out of Nottingham University, Psychology degree in hand, I was ready to change the world!
I got a job as a Behaviour Support Assistant in a Nottingham secondary school, worked my way up through the pastoral ranks but wanted to make more of a contribution to children’s mental health.
I gained my qualification in hypnotherapy back in 2009, and counselling and psychotherapy in 2011. I went on to complete teacher training, followed by further roles within safeguarding and the leadership team. But it still wasn’t quite right.
I loved working with the kids (11-16 year olds definitely keep life interesting) but with all the challenges of teaching and government expectations, I was moving further away from what I was really passionate about - supporting mental health.
After having my own children and wanting to work part time, there were some significant changes in role and I was feeling even more lost. Like so many, the pandemic put a lot of perspective on things.
I started Awaken Therapy (previously Awaken Hypnotherapy) in 2022 with the aim to support children and adults awaken their inner potential. Everyone has the ability within themselves to overcome their personal challenges but may need a bit of support along the way. And whilst I love working with children, having the opportunity to support adults as well is a welcome addition.
I left teaching shortly after, returning to a safeguarding and wellbeing role at a Social Emotional and Mental Health special school and now safeguarding lead for the same Multi Academy Trust. I do this part time alongside my private therapy practice.
I know that exploring therapy can be daunting, so be reassured that I am on the relevant Accredited Registers, a graduate member of The British Psychological Society, fully insured and have enhanced DBS clearance.
Beyond the professional stuff, I’m a big fan of 90s music, particularly HipHop and RnB, with some great memories of dancing to a few pop classics in Ocean back in my uni days!
Before kids, my husband (also a teacher) and I used to send the summer holidays travelling - Vietnam is still a firm favourite! More recently I've been introduced to the joys of camping, which is definitely a bit easier on the bank balance.
I'm pretty good on the piano and love to read, usually starting something new before I've finished what I'm on. When I get a night off from the kids, I really enjoy a meal out and a glass of red - lucky to have so many great options in Nottingham!
I’m always happy to have a chat over the phone or online so do get in touch. It's free and no obligation, just a good opportunity to see if I might be the right person to support you.
